Functions, Distances and Calculator FAQ
In this FAQ we explain what the distances we calculate mean and outline some of the calculators we have built and could build for you too!•where's my nearest - the functionality for outputting a list of places / businesses / targets etc closest to the user's entered postcode in ascending order of distance e.g. show me the 5 nearest cash points to my home postcode etc.
•within a radius - the functionality for outputting all the places / businesses / targets etc within a specific distance of an entered postcode e.g. show me all the schools within a 15 mile radius of when I live.
•delivery charge calculator - an automated way of working out the cost of making a collection / delivery using the postcodes or place names of the collection / delivery addresses. Delivery charge calculators can be provided online i.e. so a courier's / haulage company's clients can work out delivery prices themselves or they can be bespoke software that the courier / haulage company for use internally. Different rates for different vehicles, different distances, different times of day etc can all be built into the price calculation to suit whatever pricing model the courier / haulage company are using.
•journey cost calculator - similar to the delivery charge calculator except the focus here is on calculating the cost of taxi journeys or journeys by limousine etc. Common destinations are airports, train stations etc and these can be built into the calculator as 'shortcuts' to make the cost calculation even quicker. Journey cost calculators on taxi company websites often form the front end to an online taxi booking and fare payment system and so can improve the efficiency of operations.
•carbon footprint calculator - if you do cover quite a few miles each year by car or public transport etc then you may wish to 'carbon offset' i.e. make a payment to a company / organisation that will help them reduce eliminate the amount of carbon from the earth's atmosphere that you have been responsible for adding thereby becoming carbon neutral. Travel mileage is an important element of the carbon footprint calculator and knowing the g/km of CO2 that is emitted by different types of vehicles we are able to do the necessary calculations.
•distances between postcodes - the distance in miles or km between two postcodes.
•distances between towns - the distance in miles or km between two towns / places.
•distance between cities - the distance in miles or km between two cities.
•journey time calculator - the estimated time in hours and minutes that it would take to travel between two postcodes/ towns / cities etc.
•travel time calculator - the estimated time in hours and minutes that it would take to travel between two postcodes/ towns / cities etc.
•distance by road / driving distance - the approximate road distance between two postcodes / towns / cities etc in miles or kilometres.
•road mileage - the approximate road distance between two towns / cities / postcodes etc in miles or kilometres.
•as the crow flies distance - the shortest distance between two cities / towns / postcodes etc in miles or kilometres.
•straight line distance - the shortest distance between two postcodes / cities / towns etc in miles or kilometres.
•point to point distance - the shortest distance between two towns / cities / postcodes etc in miles or kilometres.
